The Verdict – How films are judged, awarded and remembered

Salome KikaleishviliFilm critic, journalist and lecturer

About this workshop

Not how a film is made, but how it is seen, valued, selected and awarded. Led by a Golden Globes voter and European Film Academy member, this workshop looks at what voters look for, how critical consensus forms, and how a film travels from festival to prize.

Who it’s for

Film lovers, aspiring critics and anyone curious about how films are valued and rewarded.

Open to everyone. No background in film criticism needed.

What you’ll explore

  1. 01

    How films are judged

What voters look for, how critical consensus forms, and how a film travels from festival to prize.

  2. 02

    Watching together

A film watched as a group, with attention to what to notice while watching.

  3. 03

    Writing a review

Analysis, evaluation and narration: how a review is built. Task: write a review.

  4. 04

    The shadow side: censorship

Concrete, comparative cases from specific countries: what was cut or banned, and who decided.

End of day outcome

You’ll leave knowing how films are evaluated from the inside, and with a finished review of your own.

Note

What you need to know

  • Arrive a few minutes early. We start on time and the first steps build everything that follows.
  • Switch your phone off, not just to silent, for the whole session.
  • We work side by side. Keep talk low and avoid extra noise while others are concentrating.
  • Follow the process step by step, even if you know a shortcut. Each stage prepares the next.
  • Stay calm and patient. Good work rewards slow, careful attention.
  • Handle the equipment with care, and ask before you move or unplug anything.
